BiblioTECH Version 8

FAQ-8-7

Last Update :  18 July 2007

SCIS : ISBNs and Subjects

Overview :

The SCIS system operated by the Curriculum Corporation provides cataloguing information which can be accessed by subscribers. BiblioTECH provides the facilities to update the BiblioTECH catalogue information from the SCIS information via the SCISweb button and via usmarc formatted downloads.

Prerequisites :

SCIS Account (to access the SCIS system)

Description :

Note :      The actual data accessed via the two methods may not necessarily be the same.

ISBNs

As of 1 January 2007, all new books will have a new 13 character ISBN instead of an older 10 character ISBN (some books published before that date may have both a 13 and a 10 character ISBN).

BiblioTECH can store a 10, a 13 or both ISBN values for each resource. SCIS download data may be searched via either the 10 or the 13 character ISBN however, particularly for new books, the download data may include one or the other or both ISBN values.

Subjects

usmarc data includes subject references for each resource. Curriculum Corporation supplied data can include their own SCIS subject references and also SCoT references. Importing both types of references may lead to duplication.

BiblioTECH has ability to exclude either or both types of references during an import. Other subject entries (ie. not specifically marked as being SCIS or SCoT) will always be included.
